A Scanner and Scanning Basics

A scanner is a very useful piece of computer equipment that will meet the needs of a basic user or a professional in need of high quality scanning capability.

When you plan to purchase a scanner there are some points that you will want to consider to make sure you get the right device for your needs.

Software

Most scanners will be compatible and able to read most software, but it is important to check and make sure that the programs that you want to run can be used with your scanner. The software that most companies provide with the scanners is a twain program which will interface with your computers current imaging program. The software is usually not professional grade or level so if you are interested in doing advanced work with your scanner you may need to purchase additional software.

Knowing your needs

When you go to purchase a scanner you will be astounded by the number of options, features, styles and types of scanners that are available. If you are not sure exactly what you need you may find yourself caught up in all the extra features that some offer and end up not getting what you really need or want. Be sure to make a list of the features that you will require.

It may be that you need to be able to scan large items on a flat scanner, film negatives or transparencies. There are also some scanners and software that will allow you to scan documents into a file and edit the text and graphics and print.

Type of scanner

Most scanners are of the flatbed variety and the options include the size of the platen that in turn defines the size of the scan that can be completed.

Generally the larger the size of the scan the higher the cost of the
equipment. There are also scanners that can do larger than a standard A4 page (8.4 X11) and can scan a full A3 page without having to adjust the page or scan in two parts.

Price range

Not surprisingly the greater the number of features and the more specialized the needs are for the scanner the more costly it is likely to be. The high resolution scanners are the most expensive, but they will turn out reproduction quality scans. Professionals and printer often use these high resolution scanners that can cost up to $50,000.00. Most people can find a good quality scanner to meet their needs for under $300.00. Since it is easy to get caught up in all the extra features make sure you are aware of what you plan to spend before you get to the store, and stick with that price range.

Most stores have demonstration models of scanners available to try out. Also ask people you know that own scanners what they recommend. Consumer reviews and messages boards are also a good source of information on the good and bad points of different models.
