LCD Monitors: What You Should Know

By Todd Addams

LCD monitors (or liquid crystal display monitors) are the most popular monitors on the market. They have replaced the original monitors called CRT monitors. LCD monitors used to be the top of the line but now they are quite common amongst computer users. LCD screens have been used for years for laptops and calculators and other things of the such. What makes these monitors so popular is that they are extremely lightweight, thin and more energy efficient than a CRT.

The liquid crystal material comes from the cholesterol of a carrot. When the LCD screen is made it is made up of two pieces of glass called substrate and putting the liquid crystals between them. Then, when in use, the backlight comes on; the light passes through the first piece of glass and into the crystals. Electrical currents allow the light to pass through in different areas, which creates the image that appears on your screen. The typical LCD screen can consist of up to 6 layers.

Liquid crystal monitors are known for their picture quality and the ordinary LCD monitor can show over 16 million colors. This means that the LCD monitor can detect even the smallest amount of color. The screens have huge amounts of pixels that twist and shape the images put onto the screen. Some LCD monitors can even show good images when viewed at extreme angles.

These monitors are also known for their non-glare feature. Even when being used in a bright room, there is limited or no glare on the screen. This feature can make it very comfortable to use as there is limited or no strain on the eyes, unlike with glass screened monitors. If you have ever looked at a CRT monitor in a dark room and then turned on a light, you may have noticed a difference in the quality of image. With LCDs this does not happen; the images are just as clear in a bright room as they are in a dark room.

When the LCD first came out they were not as cheap as they are now. Though, this type of monitors are not under $100, they are still pretty cheap compared to what they used to be. The main reason for this is supply and demand. The more they are made the cheaper they become to make. Most new computers come standard now.

When it comes to the connection you have two choices: VGA or DVI. The difference is VGA is analog and the DVI is digital. Most new computers use DVI ports instead of the VGA like the older ones. My opinion is if you have the choice go with the DVI. It's faster and sharper. However, if your computer only supports VGA, you could buy an adapter for this or you could leave it alone and use the VGA, whatever works for you.
