What is Infrared Wireless Lan?

Infrared wireless LAN is also known as wireless networking, read on to learn the history of wireless LAN and how to do it.

As the name itself suggests, wireless networkingicon is essentially a method through which we can connect networks without using wires. If you wish to know more about this exciting subject, you will definitely enjoy this series of articles.

A wireless network enables you to generate radio connections with the help of computers. These will allow for communication and connection to the Internet without having to use any wires at all. What’s more, these computers don't necessarily require a clear signal path, since the wireless signal can get through most walls and floors without difficulty.

History of Wireless LAN

Let’s now examine the odd history behind wireless networking. Based on a technological application called frequency hopping, wireless networking was, surprisingly enough, invented in the 1940s by actress Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil, a musician. Believe it or not, this is the honest truth!

The technique, which was originally planned for helping war efforts, received a patent as well. In spite of being a young Jewish woman, Hedy had been forced to socialize with Hitler and keep her background secret (she even had to leave her home in Austria to escape to London after having drugged her husband). Oddly enough, it took many years for people to realize just how important their invention was.

The American military didn’t begin using wireless networking until the '60s with the Missile Crisis in Cuba. Although in 1997 (just three years before her death) Hedy received the Pioneer Award by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, she actually never got any money from her invention since the patent had expired.

Wireless at Home

When we talk about wireless networking, we are usually referring to wireless LANs, an abbreviation that stands for local area networks.

Such networks don't actually connect your entire local area – it may for example cover only your home. Therefore, if you are planning to have wireless networking at home, what you are looking for is in fact a wireless LAN.

After having dealt with wires going all over your floor and though your walls, setting up a wireless network in your home will truly seem like a miraculous event!
