While you should take steps to keep your computer clean, it isn’t always done, or done properly.Regular cleaning can help to maintain your computer in tip top condition. By removing dust and debris you can ensure that your computer will perform consistently and over a longer period, than if you failed to look after it in anyway.
Over a period of time, dust and small pieces of debris such as food and lint will settle on the internal components of the computer equipment such as the monitor, mouse and keyboard creating a much less efficient working environment for electronics.
Cleaning your computer is fairly simple, however if you have not cleaned your computer before, there are some guidelines you should follow. We have collated some tips for cleaning the components of your computer below:
a. Monitor – You should use a soft cloth and mist of water – that is all that is really needed to bring the screen clean and back to life. This is applicable for both the screen itself and the casing. If you really want to use a special spray then ensure that you use a cleaning product that is made to clean CRT or LCD screens specifically.
b. Keyboard - Keyboards are they key debris trap of the computer because of the wear and tear they face on a daily basis. You can use a can of compressed air to blast out the debris from the crevices. If you don't have a can of compressed air, then simply turn the keyboard over, and tap it gently on the back to knock out the dust and any crumbs.
c. Mouse – Wiping the mouse with a cloth and gentle cleaner is important on a regular basis – if for hygiene than for no other reason. If you have a ‘ball’ type mouse you can remove the ball, and clean the ball with soap and water to keep it running smoothly.
d. The Computer Case – Once again, a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution or some water - as you did for the monitor - can be used to clean the exterior of the case. The cloth should be damp, not wet because you don’t; want any water to escape into the case. And of course we don’t need to mention that the machine should be turned off when you do this.
Just how often you should clean the computer depends on the environment that it is in.
If the computer is running in a room with an open window it might well collect enough dust to warrant a three monthly cleaning operation. However, if you do it regularly then it should only take 10 or 15 minutes of your time.
