They aren't as big a problem as some would have you believe if you practice safe browsing. But Hackers are getting more creative at distributing viruses across the globe.

Get educated to the dangers so you can protect your computer from the havoc a hacker can impose.

Commonly hackers will trick us by sending emails with viral attachments.

Sometimes these emails appear to come from a person that we know so we aren't suspicious; we open the email, or click the attachment, and then get caught by the hacker.

Never open attachments unless you know who they are from and what they are ... knowing what the attachment is first is important; having your email scanned automatically by protection software is essential. The software will quarantine the attachment if it is dangerous and just flat out won't let you open it. Great protection if you ask me!

Every PC can get a virus if anti-virus protection software isn't guarding the computer system and in particular their email.

Anti-virus scanners will filter all the files on your computer to find indicators of virus infection. When a virus is spotted, the software will target the infected files and attempt to clean them.

It's important to keep your anti-virus software up-to-date. You should update the software frequently – if your software’s manufacturer doesn’t send you update alerts then you should make a point of checking their site regularly. It never hurts to be prepared.

One of the best and easiest to use of the anti-virus software programs available is McAfee ; they are well-known and trusted to provide up to date security/virus alerts and offer their software at reasonable cost and keep it updated as well. I like this version because you can manage it online; and I find it easier to use than having to install from a CD.

Another item that is a must have is a spyware detection program; McAfee offers a paid version, but this free software is the one I use and recommend: Spybot Search & Destroy. If you really like it I recommend you make a donation to help keep it free and updated often.

Security software for protection against hackers actually getting into your system is something different than the above; and is also known as a "firewall" or "firewall protection." McAfee also offers a great security suite with both the firewall and anti-virus software combined.
